Chatbot Placement Notes
Where should the chatbot appear?
Start with pages where people need help to decide or complete a task. Then check the widget beside the page's forms, notices and main buttons, especially on a phone.
Start with the page's job
These are starting points for a manual review. Choose pages according to the questions your team can answer and the space the page actually has.
| Page context | Useful support | Placement check |
|---|---|---|
| Product or pricing | Explain what is included and where the published conditions apply. | Keep the price, option selectors and main purchase button visible. |
| Checkout or booking | Clarify a field, delivery information or a published booking condition. | Check the widget beside payment and submit controls, with the phone keyboard open. |
| Help or contact | Help someone find the relevant answer or reach the right person. | Keep the direct contact details and other support routes easy to reach. |
| Article or guide | Help a reader with a question that fits the subject of the page. | Decide whether the reader needs support here and whether the team has a useful answer. |
Give it room beside the page
A chat launcher can overlap a sticky purchase button, a cookie notice or another floating control. Check the page with the chatbot both closed and open. On a narrow screen, make sure a visitor can still see the main action, dismiss the chat and continue their task.
Use the keyboard as well. Move through the page's links and controls, open the widget, and check where focus goes when it closes. The launcher should have a clear name and a visible focus state.
If you display customer reviews with a tool such as JustReviews, include that section in the overlap check. Leave enough room to read the reviews and use their controls.
Choose the pages deliberately
Look at the page-targeting and position controls your chosen chatbot offers. ElfChatbot is one website-chatbot product to explore. Check the actual settings on your site before deciding where to show it.
Write down the pages you want to include and the reason for each. Then visit an excluded page to check that the rule works. If a page asks for information the chatbot cannot access, give the visitor a clear route to the team handling the request.
A booking-page review
Fictional example.
- Page task
- Choose a time and confirm a booking.
- Useful question
- Can I reschedule?
- Information to check
- The published rescheduling conditions.
- Position check
- Open the chat on a phone while the booking form is visible. Check that the time selection, confirmation button and chat close control remain reachable.
- Follow-up route
- A request for an exception goes to the person responsible for bookings.
Review notes to copy
Copy these fields for each page you want to check. Record what happened when you tested it.
Page: Visitor's main task: Question the chatbot can help with: Reason to show it here: Position with chat closed: Position with chat open: Phone and keyboard checks: Route for a request that needs a person: Change to make: Person checking the change:
